Dr David Jiang, business leader, technologist and expert on the China healthcare sector will visit BioQuarter next month to talk about the transformation underway in China’s healthcare system and the collaboration opportunities this presents.

The event is co-sponsored by Edinburgh BioQuarter and discover Edinburgh Health Informatics.

Dr Jiang is Secretary General of the Strategic Alliance of the Medical and Healthcare Industry of China (SAMHIC). SAMHIC is an alliance of 20 influential enterprises engaged in various aspects of healthcare in China, including a major Chinese insurance company, the world’s largest genomics research institution (BGI), digital health technology companies and a UK based hospital management group.

He is also CEO of the Hong Kong listed Hua Xia Healthcare which owns and operates hospitals in Mainland China.

Dr Jiang is the major shareholder of Micro-DSP, an audiology technology company, and visiting professor to several Chinese universities. He has founded or co-founded seven technology companies - three have gone public while the others are either in pre-IPO stages or continue to develop.

Mainland China has 25,000 hospitals which vary in scale, function and quality, with around 12,000 of these owned and managed by privately invested companies. Of the country’s 3.7 million hospital beds, 22% are in private and non-government sector hands.

China has recently announced a new five -year roadmap for the reform of its healthcare sector including a 30% increase in hospital beds in state-run hospitals and a two-fold increase in privately invested hospitals.

These targets could generate 400,000 new private hospital beds each year. There are huge opportunities for collaboration - including attracting investment, particularly in the area of digital health.
