Minister praises EU links

Scottish Government Further Education, Higher Education & Science Minister, Shirley-Anne Somerville visited the Usher Institute on 21 July 2016 to hear about its collaborative partnerships across the EU.

Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP was introduced to academics leading in the fields of medical informatics and health promotion at the Usher Institute.

She was given an insight into a range of projects that have benefitted from EU partnerships and grants.

Initiatives included a Horizon 2020-funded study into youth smoking prevention led by Professor Amanda Amos.

Professors Harry Campbell and Igor Rudan also highlighted international initiatives pioneered by the Centre for Global Health Research.

The University of Edinburgh has an outstanding history of discovery, invention and innovation, improving the lives of ordinary people.

Edinburgh’s position as one of Britain’s leading research universities was reaffirmed by the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The results found 83 per cent of the University’s research activity is in the highest categories - 4* and 3*- which are classified as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.

The REF also placed the University as Scotland’s top-ranked research institution.
